Wound Care Treatment Options

If you or a loved one have been living with a chronic wound, it can be debilitating to your physical and emotional health. Our experienced wound care team provides expert, compassionate care to bring hope, healing and relief from pain.

Many of our patients come to us with wounds that they have had for months or even years. We can achieve healing for patients, no matter how long their wound has existed. With our comprehensive approach, we use advanced biologics (treatments made from natural, biological sources) and advanced, active dressings for the best possible outcomes.

Medical Center of Trinity: Treatment Options for Wound Care

When you come to the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center, our wound care experts begin with a complete physical exam and medical history. We may recommend diagnostic imaging and lab tests, as well. We also address any barriers to healing, including:

  • Dead (necrotic) tissue
  • Infection
  • Medical conditions that require treatment for the wound to heal
  • Nutritional issues
  • Poor blood flow
  • Repeated trauma, such as pressure ulcers from prolonged bed rest, wheelchairs or shoes
  • Smoking

This thorough evaluation helps us develop a plan of care personalized to your individual needs. Our physicians may recommend one or more of these options for your wound care treatment:

Medical Treatment

  • Bioengineered tissues and growth factor therapy to restore damaged tissues and support the body's own healing process
  • Debridement to remove dead tissue from wounds
  • Dressings using negative pressure wound therapy to remove fluid and infectious substances
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy using 100 percent oxygen to fight infection and promote new tissue growth
  • Pain management including medication and referrals to a pain management specialist

Physical Treatment

  • Compression therapy on the lower legs to assist blood flow back to the heart
  • Physical rehabilitation services to regain strength and mobility
  • Specialized off-loading techniques, including casting, splinting or footwear, to relieve pressure or weight

Treatment for Underlying Conditions

  • Blood flow measurement to help diagnose vascular conditions that may impede wound healing, such as atherosclerosis
  • Management of blood glucose levels to improve oxygen and nutrient delivery to wounds
  • Wound cultures to check for infection delaying wound closure
