The Behavioral Health Center believes that a therapeutic relationship is built through validation of the patient and their experiences. Validation is responding to patients with understanding and acceptance. The Behavioral Health Unit provides an environment that offers a caring approach to help patients during their time of need.

Treatment Environment

The treatment environment in the Behavioral Health Center is centered on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). This approach offers a skills-based model that teaches a patient’s how to cope with painful or negative emotions that may arise from a stressful event. It is a practical way of helping patients identify ways they can successfully change their life, improve the quality of their life, and their relationships with other people.

DBT focuses on skill building with an emphasis on the following skills:

  • Core Mindfulness – learning to observe, describe & participate in the here and now
  • Distress Tolerance – the ability to accept, in a non-evaluative and non-judgmental fashion, both oneself and the current situation
  • Emotional Regulation – learning to identify and label current emotions
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness – learning effective strategies for asking for what one needs, saying no, and coping with interpersonal conflict
